If we go back in time, about 20 000 years ago, it was not just Vennesla but the whole Scandiavia covered with ice.The geologists thinks that Vennesla probably was free of ice about 10-11 000 years ago. Gradually the land started to grow slowly, first the plants, and then the forest. After some time it developed an enormous animal life. As time went by the first humans came.
Its considered that the first inhabitants settled around year 0,but before that time people invaded Vennesla along the river to do fishing and hunting. They settled at Kvarstein,Ravnaas,Heisel,Foss,Vigeland and the Venneslafjord.
LANGUAGE
They spoke a primitive language. Its called "urnordisk", that means old nordic. The settlers named the different places they came to. Kvarstein is probably the place they settled down first. We really don’t know how old the name Kvarstein is,but we know that it was the settlers who named the place. There have been found a lot of gravemounds on Kvarstein and Ravnaas,and many of the things we know about Vennesla is because of these gravemounds.
CLOTHING
They wore clothes that was made of weaved wollen yarn. The women had skirts that consist of loose twines .The men wore woollen sweathers and overcoats.They had also clothes made of leather and fur.
FOOD
The women were collecters. They gathered fruits,mushrooms and roots.The men fished and hunted animals for a living.
BELIEF
In the Viking age - and before that - the people from Vennesla probably believed in old gods like Odin and Tor, and others nordic gods. Odin was the greatest god. He had two birds ,Hugin and Munin. Everyday these birds flew around the country, and by night they came back to tell Odin about the things that had happened. Tor was Odins son. He had a mighty hammer that could hit all the things he pointed at.
