The river Otra

The river Otra stretches from Hovden up in the mountains about 260 kilometres, to Kristiansand on the coast where it flows into the ocean.

The population of fish in Otra, was very high in the 1930īs and 1940īs. But because of the industries in Vennesla which dropped a lot of toxic substances into the water during productions, the population of fish dropped heavily in the 1970īs. Then Vest-Agder county started a cleaning project. After that the population of fish increased tremendously. Today the population of fish is almost on top again.

It is Salmon in the lower part of Otra. Earlier Otra was known for the biggest Salmons in the Southern part of Norway. In 1992 the catch estimated to approximately three tons. There were a lot of people in the area who tried the Salmon fishing, for a small price of money.
