Clothes and food in old times
(back)
T
he first people known to have lived in Norway wore warm clothes made of leather and fur from animals. The clothes protected people against frost, wind and cold weather.
Dry fish and meat was food that the first people ate. With their hands they caught fish straight from the water. Then they flayed it and gave liver and roe to the children.
They took out the bowels and cut the fresh meat in small pieces and ate it raw.
There has been found bones from places where people lived on "Hardangervidda".The bones tell us about reindeer hunting already before 6300 BC.
Already before 4200 BC the people fished trout 1200 metres above the see.
It is not unreasonable to believe that people was responsible for why the trout existed in rivers on that time.
It is difficult to imagine how the fish without any help could swim upwards through the waterfalls and the rapids.
People often settled down where there was much fish, although fish was not the most important food they had.
When the nature was changing with the climate, the people changed their adjustment to the nature. As the climate became better and the temperature in the see rised, people began to eat a lagre quantity of shells.
Changes in the forest led to that hunters began to chase wild boars instead of moose.
About 4000 BC people started to settle down and cultivate their own land.
The women were collectors, they picked berry and plants that they used in the food. They also picked wood to their fireplace.
The women began to spin and the people started to wear clothes made of wool.
And old piece of clothing that belonged to a young woman from the older Bronze Age has been found. The woman was laid in her grave dressed in a shirt woven of woolen thread. She also had a belt and a skirt consisting of many loose strings. The women in Norway probably wore such clothes.
Men have been found buried with hats, woolen sweaters and mantles.
Wealthy farmers in Norway dressed like this.
