Toxic gases and other chemicals can cause chronic diseases. "The garbage stinks like used napkins", the neighbours say. "The public net" that has a transformer station at Stølen, has complained. Installing an anti-smell construction can cause more pollution, and that could be a threat to the biological complexity. They can lead to cancer, fetus damages, lowered fertility, allergy and hypersensitivity. In Norway the substances lead, cadmium, quicksilver, copper, dioxins, fluor, tar stuffs (PAH), PCB and tin-organic connections, represent the most important environment problems. Substances and products can cause health damage when using them. The Norwegian authority of pollution is working against chemical stuffs in products and fluents. Some families who live close to Støleheia are bothered by the smell. To get rid of it, there must be installed anti-smell constructions, which are going to cost 2,2 – 10 million Norwegian crowns. The foal is installation within short time.

But it is not only the compost that creates this smell. There are two dams where trickle water is treated with biological processes to clean it. This is not as efficient as they thought it would be, and therefore it does not smell very good.
