Use of alcohol at Vennesla vg. school
It is
during the youth time
most people start to drink alcohol for the first time, and has to decide whether they will drink
alcohol or not. Many youngsters mean that drinking is a part of adult life, and alcohol is
connected with social events. When youths are being asked why they drink, they are
pointing out the positive things as having a nice time together with others.
The
intention with this
project was to find out more about the use of alccohol among the students at Vennesla VGS. We choosed this
subject because we thought it was a question of current interrest.
We made a research
(enclosure 1) on this subject and delivered it out to students in the following classes: 1AAB,
1AAC, 1HSA, 1ELA, 3AFA and 3ØAD. 125 students alltogether. We also made a

Average age for the
first meating with alcohol
Year Average debut age
1990 14,8
1991 14,8
1992 14,9
1993 15,0
1994 15,0
1995 15,1
1996 15,1
1997 15,1
1998 15,1
- 14,9
In this research we found
out that the national average were larger in than in Vennesla. In the research we
found out that the average debut age in Vennesla is 14,86 (look enclosure 2). It shows
that the youths in Vennnesla is debutating a little bit earlier then other youths in
Norway. But the results were frightingly similar.
Age Average litre pure
alcohol per year by 19 years old people
13 years or younger 8,2
14 4,7
15 4,5
16 3,4
17 2,4
- 1,8
The table shows how much
youth drinks in relations to when they are debutating. Those who debutates when they are
13 years old or younger, drinks about 8,2 litre pure alcohol per year when they are 18
year olders. That is more than three times more than if you debutate when you are 17 years
old. 8,2litre pure alcohol corresponds 28 bottles of liquor for a year, 106 bottles of
wine or 533 bottles of beer.
This shows that it is more
dangerous when you start to drink if you are young.
Alcohol by parents
The
national average shows that 15 % of the youths get alcohol, sometimes or often, by their parents. In
Vennesla this number is lower. We found out that in Vennesla, the number
is 12,8 %. This may have a connection with that alcohol is only being
used in 33,6% of the
homes.
The parents attitude to
give their children alcohol has consequences for the the youths alcohol use. If the
parents has a liberal attitude to give the youth alcohol, it is a bigger
possibility that
the youth debutate early, drink every week, and drink very much. It is also proved that
youth that get alcohol at home has a very large alcohol use. Some parents seems to
believe that youth get a better relationship to alcohol when they drink in safe
conditions. The effect is unfortunately the opposite. Those who get alcohol at
home, drink
more when they get out. And there is a bigger possibility that thay start with other
drugs.
Conclution
The conclution with this
project is that youth in Vennesla VGS debutate early, but they do not drink as much as the
average in Norway. This was positive. The negative was that people from Vennesla do not
need much alcohol to get drunk.
