There are many houses lying within the secure limit (which is 40 m. ), from high- voltage cables. These cables are surrounded by electromagnetic fields microwaves, vacuumcleaners, televisions and computers, etc. They are also surrounded with electromagnetic fields. But not as much as high- voltage cables. These fields or radiation can provoke cancer, but not all people beleive this. Some think that the electromagnetic radiation is harmless.

Many families at Lomtjoen in Vennesla have been complaining about the high- voltage cables around the houses. They think that they lie too close to the houses and playgrounds, and they are concerned about their children who are exposed to this radiation.

They have gone to the local council and the newspapers but nothing has been done.

For many years doctors and scientists have been researching on this subject and many of them think that the radiation has provoked cancer on children.

A scientist's report from Denver, Colorado in the USA, showed that children who lived near high- voltage cables had a larger incidence of cancer than other children.

After this report was made public, many people thought that there might be something true in what was written in the report.

The World's Health Organisation (the WHO) recommended in 1974 that houses should not be within 40 m. of a 500 kV high- voltage cable.

The limit for a 420 kV high- voltage cable in Norway is 9,5 m.

Allen Frey, an American biophysicist, said: "If the wave- and ray- disorder had been visible, an observer in space, in 1900 would see the earth as a dark lump of earth. But today he would see a glowing sun".

Lomtjoen:

Electromagnetic fields at Lomtjoen, Vennesla, is surround the houses, kindergartens and playgrounds. In the new building site there are two high voltage cables lying close to the new houses. One of the cables is 22kV, and the other is 110kV.

Some of the families who live up there are concerned about their children's future, because there has been so much talking about the carcinogenic rays.

Here you can see a 22kVs cable lying between two houses. On the one side it has a distance of 5- 6 m. and on the other side a distance of 10- 12 m. This is acceptable according to Norwegian law.
