Information about berries

The most common berries we Norwegian pick, are blueberries, raspberries and mountain cranberries.

In the old times, berries were more important for the housekeeping than they are nowadays. The people picked the berries for them selves and for sale, this gave them more money and better health. Today only strawberries and cranberries are picked for sale.

In the nature the berries have two functions. They are food for the animals (people) and they are the plants stamens.

The Contents of berries

Berries are important vitamin-C sources, even if the amount varies. The berries that have the highest amount of vitamin-c, are black currants and hip. Other contents that are found in berries are fruit-acid, minerals and vitamins.

Earlier we made juice and jam out of berries. Today we freeze them. Preserving substances are added to keep the berries fresh (benzoacid is added). After that you can cook them and add sugar.

Berries are used as spices, wine and liqueur. Some of the berries and their plants are used in medicines.
