The beavers in Vennesla

The population of beavers (Castor fibre) in Vennesla is big, and it is
still getting bigger.
We do not have the total number of the amount bevers in Vennesla today,
but we know that in 1998 there were about 240 beaverhuts in Vennesla.

Here we have a picture of a beverhut taken in Vennesla.

We also know that in 1998 there were the amazing number 360 beavers in Vennesla county.
We assume that the numbers have gotten higher than that by now.

We have sadly not found any beavers to take a photo of, but that is not that weird
because beavers are shy and careful animals.

But we did find a trail that is made by the beaver when he drags the trees down to his hut.
This picture is also taken in Vennesla.

Beverhunting is allowed, but it is very strict.
In Vennesla there are about 10-20 beavers who are hunted every year.
Like anywhere else in Norway we protect our beavers.
Vandalism at beverhuts is a crime in Norway.

As we said before we have not gotten a picture of a beaver, but my companion has drawn a beaver in full action.

Where the beaver lives

Beavers live by the water where they have their beaver-huts.
The hut is made of trees and sticks which he chews down and drags them to their hut. The entrance to the hut is made under water. In this way he can easily get into the beaver-hut, and no other animal can get into it.
Usually they build their huts at the end of the river or lake. In this way they can stop the waterflood.

What does the beaver look like?

The beaver has a heavy-built body, but it has got short stubby legs.
The backbones have got swimming feet.
The beaver has a thick purr, and a flat and 25-50 cm long tail.
It has got a god sense of hearing and smelling.
The beaver is a typical water-animal.

Positive and negative things about the beaver

The beaver is as we have said a water-animal, and it makes its hut mainly of sticks and trees.
That is why it must chew down trees to bring materials to build its hut.
Not everybody is so happy with having the beavers around.
Like the forest owners who get the trees on their private property ruined because of the beaver. They could have used these trees for materials for houses, paper and so on.
Many use steel fences at the bottom of the trees so that the beavers cannot
chew the trees down.
A positive thing about beavers is that use sticks ad trees for its hut that normally would lie and just rot away in nature.
